Opening the Training Apartment
21/12/2011
Thanks to the generous donations from two family foundations, a new program was opened at the end of November 2011. The program targets 36 young adults, aged 17-25, with intellectual disabilities who will participate in the program in the school year 2011-2012. Over 15 weeks (once a week), each group of six participants will be helped to prepare for the time when they will move away from their parental homes and into an out-of-home sheltered living arrangement. In doing so they will become more independent and act more like their non-disabled peers. The candidates for participation in the program were referred to AKIM-Jerusalem by local schools of special education and welfare agencies. The participants will be bused to and from the program. They will come from their schools or families and will be brought back to them again the following morning. The program will focus on four areas: (a) Community orientation; (b) Activities of daily living; (c) Social skills development; (d) Encouraging the participants’ families to engage in and play a constructive role in helping their son or daughter’s determine their future. The combined result of these interventions is an adolescent who is better prepared, emotionally, socially and skill-wise to meet the challenges of his adult life. Likewise, the parents will get professional support in adjusting to the new realities when their child finally leaves home.
