Our History and Progress
Community Advocacy was founded on 1993 in Beer Sheva based on a model developed in Montreal, Canada for empowerment of residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods. In 1993 branches were opened in Beer Sheva and Jerusalem. In 2000 a branch was opened among the unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev, and a branch opened in Lod in 2006. National advocacy campaigns in the 1990's led to the passing of the public housing law, and continued activity has led to improvements in upkeep of public housing. The dental care activists are working to introduce universal dental care in the public health basket. Our volunteer activists run food cooperatives in disadvantaged neighborhoods, advocate for nutritional security. Our work overseeing the Welfare/Work program led to many improvements in the program and changes in the law. Our workers rights project helps outsourced workers learn about their rights, in four languages. We work with parallel organizations in Canada, Jordan, and the PA.
