Self-Defense and Personal Empowerment Program for Arab Women

About the Project
The program designed to empower Arab women through preventative self-defense training.

Why this Project is important
The primary objectives of the project for which we seek funding are to: 1) provide the practical tools, skills and knowledge to prevent violence against women in the Arab sector, and 2) identify and train a motivated corps of influential women leaders as IMPACT instructors and/or assistants in order to independently empower this sector of society on a deeper level. The primary beneficiaries of the project's pilot will be the 300 girls and young women (ages 16-60) who currently are educational and social role-models (including counselors, teachers, student body leadership, social workers and community workers dealing with at-risk populations who have access to large numbers of women and children in the Arab sector). The secondary beneficiaries are those who will be impacted by project alumni who will serve as a “task force for social change.”

What the project achieves
The program will be organized around three distinct phases: 1) El HaLev will conduct 100 hours of "Freedom to Choose" self-defense training for up to 30 women in each course. 2) El HaLev will provide 100 hours of leadership training. 3) Some 30 participants who demonstrate strong leadership potential will be chosen to take El HaLev’s IMPACTcourse which is comprised of 2 courses of 25 hours each with 15 participants in each course. IMPACT is an internationally recognized personal safety, assertiveness and self-defense training program, which is part of a comprehensive effort to prevent sexual assault and other acts of interpersonal violence and boundary violations. At every phase, the overarching goal will be to help girls and women understand the power of preventative self-defense, while imparting requisite tools to help them identify and combat verbal, physical, and sexual abuse which occurs in the family, the educational system, the work place, and elsewhere in their communities.
