About the Project
This project aims to improve the economic conditions of poor Arab women, acquainting them with basic economic concepts, improving their skills and independence in handling financial matters, and encouraging them to safeguard their financial future.

Why this Project is important
Most Arab-Israeli women lack basic knowledge about financial matters and perceive them as a male task. Uninformed about their own household economy, they rely on male family members to handle the money matters. The reasons are traditional gender roles of men and women, intensified by the fact that in about 82% of Arab households the husband is the sole breadwinner. Economic passivity has graver consequences for women, as they are economically dependent on their husbands. Loss of a self-employed husband can lead to economic despair, as can divorce. Furthermore, many women never before heard of the social benefits and tax reductions to which they are entitled, and naturally, most had no idea how to claim these entitlements either. Information on such matters published by the state does not reach Arab women who either do not read Hebrew, do not surf the Internet, or often do not travel outside of their villages.

What the project achieves
Women can improve their situation promptly if they have access to relevant information and - even more importantly - if they are encouraged. This is why Kayan decided to tackle the instilled barriers and the lack of knowledge that create poverty. Since many Arab women do not participate in the workforce, they have no financial coverage what so ever for old age. If these women don`t start preparing today, they will receive an old-age allowance too small to live off of later in life. Once we tell women this painful truth, they wake up and start to inquire about old-age provisions. Furthermore, lacking better knowledge, many women do not answer back when the staff of social welfare institutions tells them that they are not entitled to any benefits. We encourage women to demand what is rightfully theirs. In order to raise womens awareness, we bring the information directly to them through workshops, seminars, easy-to-read guides in Arabic, and one-on-one counseling.
