About the Project
The Leadership Through Computers Program uses technology as a means of providing youth-at-risk with computer knowledge and leadership skills. Graduates learn responsibility to their community and become role models for their peers.
Why this Project is important
Technology today is intertwined with almost every facet of a teenager's life. They use cell phones to send messages and communicate with friends, computers to search for information and complete homework assignments and I Pods to listen to music and screen movies. They learn to adapt quickly to the newest gadgets and technologies. Their technical knowledge and savvy can be used as a shortcut to empower youth and change their lives.
Underprivileged youth are not exposed to computers and therefore are unable to keep up with their peers in school. Eventually, upon finishing school, they cannot find higher-paying jobs and remain mired in poverty- unfortunately, same as their parents.
What the project achieves
The LTC program consists of three stages:
- Access: Students are provided with an intensive, fifty hour course in basic computer literacy.
- Acquire: In this stage, students are equipped with teaching skills and provided with the tools to impart their own knowledge to future participants.
- Empower: Students can now transfer knowledge into action. The new graduates is given an opportunity to help train a new group of participants and work as assistant teachers in beginner's computer courses.
The LTC program provides its graduates with a unique opportunity to acquire essential computer skills as a means to boost self esteem and develop creativity. In addition, LTC creates a platform for substantial professional opportunity, enhances confidence, raises responsibility levels and ultimately teaches youth the vital value of contributing to the wider community and society at large. All of these lessons will serve them well as they transition from high school to the army and university.
