The community of Ethiopian olim and their families in Israel number today more than 150,000 people. It is an ancient Jewish community, which in the last generation has come to Israel in its entirety, out of deep and keen Zionist feelings; but it is also a community that finds itself at times isolated, in conflict with the Israeli lifestyle, and struggling to integrate within the wider society.
Obstacles of language and mentality as well as problems in interacting with state institutions, come on top of expressions of intolerance from some quarters of Israeli society – altogether adding to the difficulties of the community's efforts to integrate. As a result of these and other reasons, the community of Ethiopian olim has not as yet been significantly represented within the Israeli media scene.
Recognizing the importance that the media, especially the electronic media, has on many aspects of Israeli society, Fana has been focusing its activities on assisting the community's presence in tThe practical goals directing the activities of Fana in the media field, are: a focus on presenting practical solutions to various difficulties and challenges facing the community; supplying information that can assist members of the community in their dealing with Israeli society and institutions; offering the community the opportunity for better acquaintance with various aspects the wider Israeli culture, society and lifestyles.
No less important among Fana goals is to assist, as much as possible, members of the community in finding opportunities for employment in the media and communication sectors. Accordingly, the association insists that in all projects it is involved in, there will be an absolute majority of workers from within the Ethiopian Olim community, among those involved.
