The State of the Sector

09:50 - 10:00 How I did it - Judy Singer, Gift of Life

From a visionary idea to reality: How Israel became the world's leading country in voluntary kidney donation

Judy Singer, Gift of Life

A decade ago, there were almost no kidney donations in Israel except for family members, and the percentage of donors among those who passed away was among the lowest in the Western world. Today, after almost a decade of activity by the Gift of Life, little Israel is among the world's leading countries in kidney donations and number one in the world in altruistic donations (donations from complete strangers). Here’s how we did it.

Is the future of Israeli philanthropy Israeli?

More than any other country, Israeli philanthropy is reliant on our friends abroad: In 2017, 2/3 of Israeli philanthropy were donations from Jews and Christians from around the world. But as priorities in America change, what does the future of Israeli philanthropy look like? And if the future of Israeli philanthropy lies here at home, what are the best ways to increase giving among Israelis?

The story of the children of Yemen - How we brought the historical scandal back into to the public consciousness

Shlomi Chatucha - Eastern Spirit

The story of the children of Yemen has come to the headlines over and over in the seventy years of the existence of the State of Israel, and each time it has been silenced and repressed by various institutional actions. The most aggressive act of silencing was carried out at the end of the work of the State Commission of Inquiry, which operated between 1995 and 2001, when the report concluded that most of the children had died and that the culprits were the parents themselves. Today, in 2018, we succeeded in reaching a situation in which the Israeli public knows the affair and the shocking testimonies of the families, and not only the "bottom line" issued by the institutional investigation committees. We succeeded in bringing the voice of the victims, and the establishment to recognize the injustice and force it to sit at the negotiating table in order to bring justice to the families.

11:55 - 12:05 How I did it - Dalit Butbul, Chaverim l'Refuah

How can we keep Israel's water and soil clean while saving lives?

Dalit Butbul, Chaverim l'Refuah

In Israel today, roughly 300 million shekels of medicine are thrown away. When thrown in the garbage, they end up poisoning our ground and water with antibiotics and toxins. So what do we do to change this? We both act – and educate, both in Israel and abroad. We placed 600 collection points across the country: at banks, corporation headquarters, private people homes, etc. – and people are leaning to bring their used or expired meds to us. After picking up the meds - we rigorously sort through them. 80% are either expired or not fit for use. We send these off to ‘green’ destruction and recycle their packages. The remaining meds are then sent to over 4,400 needy people every month. These are people who can’t afford their life-saving medicines, and often must choose between medicine – and food. We need everyone to join our efforts! And we want to show you how. Because by teaching sustainability – we’re also saving saving lives. And in Israel of 2018 it is simply unacceptable that a person lose his or her life just because they can’t afford their medicine.

12:05 - 12:45

The ₪17 Billion Non-Profit Tax

The best part about being a non-profit is that you don't have to pay tax, right? Well, look closer at the numbers and you'll see that in Israel, non-profits actually pay more tax than do companies. In 2018, Israeli non-profits paid over ₪17 billion in taxes that no corporation pays. In this panel, a lifetime Tax authority employee, a leading lobbyist, and one of the founders of Ynet will help us to understand how has this situation come about, what does it mean for your organization, and how can we as a sector work to change this policy?

Live with certainty from the uncertainty of life - from identifying risks to managing opportunities

Anat Ayalon, MS Israel

Three years ago I was paralyzed in both legs and a hand. Today I ballroom dance, participating in competitions in Israel and abroad. The only certainty in life with multiple sclerosis is uncertainty and frightening uncertainty. How do you take the fear that sometimes paralyzes it into something motivating? What are the four golden rules of life?

Arik Ben-Yair

Ofer Flynn

12:55 - 13:25

The End of Philanthropy in Israel?

Most nonprofits in Israel raise a large part of their income from donations. Today, however, a change in Israeli law allows non-profit organizations to establish businesses aimed at generating independent income. Is it possible to imagine a day when the non-profit sector doesn’t need donations at all?

In this session, Ofer Flynn, an expert on the establishment of social businesses, will present the ways in which Israeli non-profit organizations can establish business activities. Alongside him, Arik Ben-Yair, the former CFO of Haaretz-TheMarker Group, who built the first paywall in Israel and perhaps saved the Israeli press, will talk about the ways and means of bringing about change in your organization's business model. He’ll also talk about Kanyata.com, the new online platform that allows nonprofits to raise capital by selling shares directly online to the Israeli and international public.
