One out of every hundred children is born mentally retarded to some degree. Some of these children grow up to become a part of society or live at its edges, perhaps without the general public being aware of it.

Today, after years of relentless efforts and determination, AKIM ISRAEL has become the National organization leading the campaign that aims at changing the way the Israeli society and its authorities see the mentally disabled person. Nowadays, AKIM ISRAEL represents over 34,000 families and is active in promoting the rights of mentally disabled persons through legislation while initiating the development of model services required by mentally disabled persons. Some of these services have been adopted by the municipalities and have become an integral part of the array of services provided to the mentally disabled persons in Israel.
AKIM ISRAEL aspires to enable the mentally challenged person's self realization as an integral part of an open and tolerant society. AKIM ISRAEL's Headquarters, situated in Tel Aviv, invests energy, time and money in trying improve the quality of life of the mentally disabled person in all of its aspects.
